NVF Tunnels Working Group Seminar 2026
In September 2026, the Nordic Road Association (NVF) brought together tunnel experts and key stakeholders from across the Nordic countries for the NVF Tunnels Working Group Seminar 2026, held in Voss and Flåm, Western Norway. The seminar provided an important platform for exchanging knowledge, sharing practical experiences, and discussing common challenges and future developments in tunnel safety, operation, maintenance, and technology.
The programme combined technical presentations, professional discussions, and site visits to some of Norway's most spectacular tunnels. These activities offered participants valuable insights into different approaches to tunnel management, technological developments, and operational practices across the Nordic region.
A particular highlight was an emergency response exercise, demonstrating the importance of effective coordination and cooperation between tunnel infrastructure managers and emergency services. The exercise provided an opportunity to explore practical challenges in emergency preparedness and response, emphasising the critical role of communication, clearly defined responsibilities, and coordinated action in managing tunnel incidents.
Sharing Knowledge Across National Borders
One of the greatest strengths of the NVF Tunnels Working Group is its ability to bring together professionals from different countries, organisations, and technical disciplines. Although the Nordic countries operate under different organisational structures and regulatory frameworks, they face many similar challenges in managing tunnel infrastructure and maintaining high standards of safety, operational efficiency, and sustainability.
The seminar highlighted the value of learning from one another's experiences, exchanging practical solutions, and exploring opportunities for further cooperation. By sharing both successful practices and lessons learned from operational challenges, participants can identify opportunities for improvement and contribute to the continuous development of tunnel management across the Nordic region.
As tunnel infrastructure becomes increasingly complex, the need for effective knowledge transfer, professional competence, technological innovation, and cross-border cooperation continues to grow. Meeting these challenges requires not only technical expertise but also strong collaboration between infrastructure owners, tunnel operators, emergency services, research institutions, and industry partners.
